About Me...

I am a mixed-media fiber artist who currently has a small art studio in my home in Southern California as well as a small studio in my home in southern Vermont. They are chalk full of all sorts of fabrics, scraps, paints and threads! Keeping them organized is a chore but I try....sometimes!
I travel by train from one coast to the other several times a year. I could never pick one
place over the other for they both offer so much and constantly inspire my art and creativity!
In 2009 I retired from teaching in San Diego
and started Art Quilts 101, Art Quilts Marketplace and Sue Freebern Designs: Show & Tell on Facebook to learn more about art quilting from others as well as share what I have learned. The groups are archived now but I continue to post on Sue Freebern Designs where it gives me more time to create rather than administrate! HA!

Creating...

It seems that I have alway been a creator of some sort of art since I was young.  As soon as I came up with an idea or learned something new I was off making it
and experimenting with the process and techniques. I never liked to copy anything but always wanted to put my own twist on it. I eventually started making small art
quilts and buying fabric and that was
the beginning of this story....

This is a pictorial quilt I did for my sister-in-law and brother, It is of their two dogs, Joey and Quinn, looking out the window at the cows who got loose and into our yard!

Art Quilting...

Years ago I saw a pictorial art quilt in a shop window in Dorset, Vermont and I was so inspired that I started my own cottage industry in Vermont. I designed and sold art quilts that were stitched onto burlap and framed with wooden hoops. Years later I continued to be fascinated by art quilting and created Art Quilts 101 and Art Quilts Marketplace on Facebook as mentioned above. That was followed by the creation of my artist Page on Facebook called Sue Freebern: Mixed-Media Fiber Artist. Now I am beginning the exciting process of designing my own art quilt patterns, digitally enhanced mixed media art work as well as fiber art where I blend my love of photography and textiles together into one!
I hope you will visit my shops on Craftsy, ETSY and eBay often to see my new work.
Thank you!

Stitch Meditation...Changing the Way I Look at Things

PictureRoots of Grace #1- By Sue Freebern
I've always loved to stitch by hand for there was something soothing, and meditative about it plus my soul felt connected to times long long ago. But unfortunately I stopped hand stitching for my fingers could no longer take those tiny stitches, with those tiny needles with those tiny holes to thread without severe pain in my hands due to arthritis.
Then I stumbled on Liz Kettle's video on Stitch Meditation (see my new page called STITCH MEDITATION/SLOW STITCHING). It inspired me so much I decided to start hand stitching again no matter what! I decided to CHANGE THE WAY I LOOKED AT THINGS which meant looking at hand stitching a different way. Jude Hill talks about a loose weave in her videos so I thought that might work and maybe using larger needles would help! I also had to try and use another finger besides my index finger. I tried it and it worked! I could stitch again! Not only can I now stitch but the idea of not planning out a project and using recycled fabrics entices me. Maybe it will inspired you too! We will see where this goes. So....do visit my new page and I hope it inspires you as well!
