I love fabric collage and have held out showing this but it's almost finished and the pattern will be coming soon. I took my original Sea Turtle Silhouette pattern enlarged it and did it collage style with my own twist. Hope you like it! More soon!
Now that I have my tiny collage pieces in place I decided at first that I was going to just free motion stitch like crazy all over the top but I remembered how it went the last time on the blue fabrics. The foot kept getting caught up or the fabric tips were bent. I could have taken more time to secure them with a bit more of glue but I decided this time I would add a very light colored green tulle. I used tulle on my confetti quilts but haven't done it on this fabric making collage yet. I loved free motion quilting all over the top. So freeing! You can go up and back and all around. Very good practice! There are no rules in my free motion stitching so it was great fun. I used King Tut variegated thread by Superior in the top and I was very happy with it. I used a clear monofilament thread by Madeira in the bobbin. I never have any problems with Madeira monofilament thread and using it in the bobbin is fabulous! NO changing bobbins! Now the tulle over the whole piece did make it a tad bit lighter and not as bold but I think it will work. AND I found that once stitched you can cut out small pieces using freezer paper over the top (Caution! Press lightly because tulle melts!) and the fabric all holds together nicely. No loose pieces. I love it. See below photo for example. How fun is this! I can't wait to show you what I did with this. Pattern coming this year... I promise! More soon!
Making an art quilt using the fabric collage method makes it not only unique but one of a kind. No one, not even you, could possibly create the same piece twice. I love taking very small pieces of fabric and gluing them onto muslin with a glue stick. I am trying different methods and this is one I still like! I press and then either free motion quilt on top as is or use tulle on top. That will be the next post. Depending on what you are doing with it will depend on what other materials you will use. I myself will be cutting small pieces from this to place on my pattern. There are many different methods of fabric collage out there! You might discover a few!
